Albury Wodonga features a comprehensive range of first class sporting facilities and is an ideal location in which professional athletes can train or participate. The cities provide a sound infrastructure enabling support of sporting and leisure activities in a vast number of disciplines. Albury Wodonga is the only regional centre to host an annual sports festival of the magnitude and prestige of the Albury Wodonga Festival of Sport.

During the winter months, on any one weekend, there will be a range of sporting events from rugby league, rugby union, soccer and Australian Rules football matches on our numerous sporting ovals, to games of hockey, netball and indoor cricket.

As the snow melts on the nearby mountains, Albury Wodonga’s climate moves into an extended period where the weather is ideal for outdoor activities. Cricket matches can be seen on ovals throughout the district, mountain bike riders take to the Alps and tennis, swimming and water polo teams put their winter training into practice. Regional opportunities for individual sporting activities abound and include adventure options such as abseiling, bush walking, horse trekking, caving, para-sailing, white water rafting, skydiving and hang-gliding. During spring, summer and autumn the Paddlesteamer Cumberoona provides a wonderful experience on our section of the Murray River.

Sporting Infrastructure in Albury Wodonga includes two high quality athletics tracks, one a synthetic surface and the other grass. Alexandra Park in Albury has been host to Australian and British Commonwealth Games teams for training and was upgraded to international standard, making it one of the finest athletics tracks in New South Wales. The Ukrainian Olympic and Para-Olympic Athletics teams prepared for the 2000 Sydney Games at this facility.

Our other sporting facilities include:

  • Lawn bowls clubs – we host a number of bowling tournaments annually with excellent facilities located close to all amenities
  • Equestrian centres – the Wodonga Equestrian Centre has an indoor arena at the Wodonga Racecourse and Showgrounds, housing facilities which are suitable to accommodate a competition featuring 80 competitors and up to 200 horses. The Albury Wodonga Equestrian Centre has an international standard cross-country course and includes 40 enclosed stables, 40 covered yards and 110 open yards. The national polo cross competition was held here in 2004, with teams coming from all over Australia.
  • Superb golf courses – Albury Wodonga offers a first class range of golf courses to choose from, all located within an easy few minutes drive of the city centres. Annually, golf tournaments are held throughout the district.
  • Hockey fields – one of the largest sporting events in regional Australia is the Easter Hockey Carnival which has been running for over 30 years, attracting teams from around Australia and overseas
  • Shooting facilities – including a major shooting complex on 96 hectares operated by the Albury Wodonga Clay Target Club.
  • Sporting grounds – Albury Wodonga provides a number of sporting grounds suitable for a variety of uses from national football games to international cricket matches
  • Stadiums – described as one of the finest in NSW, the Albury Sports Stadium caters for a number of sports and has 5 indoor courts marked for basketball, netball, volleyball, badminton and indoor soccer. The Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre also has 5 indoor courts and other facilities including a 25m , 8 lane indoor heated pool, spa, sauna, fully equipped gymnasium, aerobic area and child care centre.
  • Swimming centres – as well as natural waterways, Albury Wodonga offers a number of high quality swimming facilities suitable for a number of disciplines including swimming, diving, water polo and synchronized swimming.
  • Tennis courts – Albury Wodonga features over 180 tennis courts. Home of Margaret Court, the region is steeped in tennis traditions and is famous for its regional tournaments.
  • Canoeing – canoeists have the opportunity to train on a number of water courses in Albury Wodonga. Teams and individuals may choose from the man made facility, the Water Parkland, and combine this training with river training on the Murray River as well as on Lake Hume.
